Sigiriya, Pidurangala and Dambulla in one trip

Three of the best-known sights in the cultural triangle are close together. With a private car you can see them in a day or two without rushing.

Sigiriya rock fortress rising above the forest

Sigiriya

The rock fortress rises straight out of the forest. The climb is on steps and metal stairways, with the frescoes and the lion's paws on the way up and the palace ruins on top.

Go early. The heat builds quickly, and the queues on the stairways get longer through the morning. Allow two to three hours, and more if you like to take your time.

Pidurangala

Pidurangala is the rock next to Sigiriya, and from the top you look straight across at it. The path is rougher, with a short scramble over boulders near the summit.

It is a favourite for sunrise. Bring a torch for the walk up in the dark, and shoes with a good grip.

Dambulla cave temple

The cave temple sits above the town, with painted ceilings and many Buddha statues inside the caves. It is often visited on the way to or from Sigiriya.

What to wear at temples

Temples in Sri Lanka ask visitors to dress respectfully.

  • Cover shoulders and knees
  • Remove shoes and hats before entering
  • Carry socks, as the ground can be hot
  • Do not pose with your back to a Buddha statue for photos

Planning the day

A common plan is Pidurangala at sunrise, breakfast, then Dambulla, with Sigiriya the next morning. Your driver waits at each stop, so you can change the order on the day if the weather or crowds suggest it.
