South and west coasts

Mirissa, Galle, Hiriketiya and Tangalle are usually at their best from around December to April. The south-west monsoon brings more rain and rougher seas to this side of the island from roughly May to September.

East coast

Trincomalee, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay work the other way. They are usually drier and calmer from around May to September, which is also the main surf season at Arugam Bay.

Hill country

Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy can be visited all year. The air is cooler than on the coast, and showers are common at any time, so pack a light jacket whatever the month.

Cultural triangle

Sigiriya, Pidurangala and Dambulla are hot and bright for much of the year. Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the climbs are easier and the light is softer.

Yala and the parks

Yala is open for most of the year but usually closes for a few weeks in the dry season, often around September and October. Udawalawe is a good alternative for elephants at that time.
